Luggage - what to carry on

Luggage Review:

When I travel I primarily use a carry on. My large luggage set stays at the hotel and my carry on luggage goes with me on small one or two day excursions. So my carry on luggage has to be versatile. I am a photo journalist so I need a carry on that looks nice but can take some abuse. If you are a business traveler you may prefer a carry on like a US business case. They look clean and polished like the paper work for a multimillion dollar deal is inside them. I personally like the carry luggage by Samsonite. Fundamentally the key to a great carry on is a lot of pockets and lightweight. Carry on luggage is just that something you "carry on" so make sure it will not exhaust you. Never put your laptop in carry on luggage unless it was designed for a laptop. You will hurt your back and shoulders if you try to stuff your laptop into regular carry on luggage.

Carry on luggage should be "airport security friendly". What does that mean? It means it unzips easily and exposes the contents of your bag completely without them falling out. It has no secret pockets or hidden compartments. It also has a minimal amount of metal and meets all carryon luggage size requirements. Different types of aircraft can handle different carry on luggage dimensions. Check with your airline if you have questions about carry on luggage restrictions. Be reasonable if your are flying in a little "puddle jumper" chances are your luggage is not coming on the plane with you.

If you are considering leather carryon luggage think carefully about the type of travel you do as leather has certain care requirements.

Your carry on luggage is your travel partner. It should be like having a personal assistant that holds everything you may need on a moments notice like your ID and passport. It should be as easy to travel with as a good friend. If you own a piece of carry on luggage that you don't like dump it like a bad relationship. There is too much great luggage out there to fight with a piece you don't like.
