Backpack Review:
I
am an avid hiker and climber. I believe in
having the best gear available. However there is
a big difference between hiking backpacks and
travel backpacks. Consider a travel backpack if
you are taking the train across Italy and
staying at a hostels. I use a travel backpack
every time I fly to Philadelphia to see my
nephew baby Jack-Jack. Travel backpacks are
great for trips that require you to be light
weight and very mobile. A good travel backpack
allows you to carry a change of clothes for the
baby, toiletries, a snack and your favorite
electronic device (but not a laptop). When rock
climbing in Black Mountain I fell 10 feet
straight down on my back. It was my REI external
frame backpack that saved me. Had I been wearing
a travel back pack I would probably still be up
on Black Mountain waiting for the helicopter to
airlift me out. If you are considering a rolling
back pack make sure it is extremely rugged and
also lightweight. Remember if you are wearing
your rolling backpack as a backpack you will
have to carry all the weight of the technology -
like the extendable handle and retracting
wheels. If you fatigue easily consider how much
rolling vs. carrying you will do.

In the world of crushed vertebra
and fatigued disks a backpack with a frame is a
necessity. Most backpackers, crazy as we are,
carry loads that call for an internal or
external framed backpack. I personally own a 4lb
Kelty made especially for “lightweights” like
me. For extend backpacking carrying capacity is
no longer a question of pain management. New
lightweight framed backpacks offer generous
internal space. When packing you backpack,
keep heavy items
close to your back, near your shoulder blades.
Load heavy items high inside your backpack and
close to your body, centering the pack's weight
over your hips. Utilize your compression straps
and harness they are not just there for looks
but to center you weight, reduce friction and
make the backpack apart of your body. Choose a
ridged heddle against your back. Soft foamy
backpacks might feel good when you are trying
them on but will cause hotspots when use on long
hikes.
